Just bought a new car, the motor tax on it expired 08/22. I want to drive it quickly for personal reasons. What are my options to get tax disc sorted?

    1. Does the Dublin motor tax office allow walk ins? Could I call them up on Monday arrange to get it done there?
    2. What is the fine, penalty points for failing to display the tax? I find 2 sources 1 claims only a €60 fine https://www.cartell.ie/faqs/how-to-check-is-my-car-taxed/

and another claims that Gardai can impound it if it's 2 months or over https://seamusmaguire.ie/criminal-law/insurance-and-tax-offences/

I'd just like confirmation if that means if I was to technically take it on the road they can't impound it, and I'd lose just €60? I'd rather do my form up online and take the chance if so but I don't want any penalty points or unpleasant action I guess.

No Garda is going to stop you over a two months expired disc.

Even if they do, it'll just be that you're asked to produce it within 10 days, but you can safely ignore that.

No, the motor tax office don't do walk ins any longer, just put the change of ownership chit in behind the tax disc and present it if asked.

The Guards do understand that it takes a bit of time for change of ownership to process, so long as you're insured, you're golden, drive her on.

You are liable for taxing the car from the start of the month in which you purchased it.

You are not liable for any outstanding tax before that.

    Not your ornery onager

Thank you. Yes of course I had the insurance sorted before getting the car.

Is there any penalty points? For the motor tax. If a gardai was to get nasty.

The one thing you could get caught on is if a traffic warden sees the car parked without tax, they could issue a ticket.

a guard is unlikely to do anything.

    No penalty points.
