    Why do long threads have to be closed every so often then a new one opened? example in the liveline thread . Every ten thousand posts I think?

    They don't.

    The old 10,000 post limit was due to performance bottleneck in vbulletin. Vanilla doesn't have that problem, pretty much the only thing it does better than vbulletin.
