Some apps slow to load - Eir

    I've got Eir FTTH 150MB.

Very solid speed tests of 140mb and decent ping and latency.

A weird one - some apps on mobile devices take extra time to load. Twitter and Instagram take time to load feeds, images and video. If I toggle WiFi off and switch to 4G, they load almost instantly.

The brother is seeing same on his iOS device, I'm using Android.

    Definitely something in the router.

I logged in and set Firewall to "low" but that hasn't helped.

    Anyone ever seen this ?

This is exactly what is happening to me on eir WiFi too.

Take Reddit for example, the app will take about a minute to load images and thumbnails etc on load up,

However if I view the Reddit website in chrome its all fine loading everything in seconds

I wonder is there some throttling going on at the router to stop multiple pieces of media loading quickly?

It's shocking; had a check for any router settings but nothing obvious jumps out.

And it's just Eir too, Last provider Virgin didn't behave like this at all.

It's a bit crazy that things load in chrome instantly but via the dedicated apps it's takes minutes or not at all!

Fingers crossed someone has a solution.

The thought of trying to explain this one to tech support 🤯

Contract is up in December, off to Vodafone/Siro for me.

And there I was thinking I was going mad.

Have had Eir FTTH for about 6 months and as soon as I got it apps like BBC News, RTE, Betfair, MLB were all slow to load on my Android phone.

And like others I have great download speed, 500mb/sec, and upload speeds close to it

But now that I know it's not just me I might start researching it a bit.

Web pages are fine loading, it's just the apps.

Yep, Instagram won't even load stories for me. I tap into it and it gives me a loading screen. Shocking stuff from Eir.

Have you tried change the DNS servers in the router to something like 8.8.8.8 & 8.8.4.4 (Google) to see if it makes any difference

    Ok that helped enormously.

For some odd reason though speed tests have dropped to around 40-50mb, but overall that doesn't really matter as such.

Eir getting the bullet anyway in December !

Yeah bound to be a dns issue just change to one you like 👍

I think the default configuration has the CPE (router) acting as a caching dns server for devices on the local network. I prefer it to assign external dns ips to the devices, whether eir's own or google's.

Speed tests still on the 30-40mb range this morning anyway.

Anyone gotmother potential DNS I could try? Do Eir have their own ones that might bizarrely work and fix the app throttle issue 🤣

eir dns are 159.134.0.1 and 159.134.0.2

Are you testing over wifi - issue could be there?

Try Steve Gibson's DNS benchmark tool ...

    Think I have it lads,

Turn off IPV6 on your router!

All thanks to this fellas guide:

I rebooted my android after applying this setting in like step one (turn off ipv6) and twitter / insta / reddit loaded instantly!

I had similar issues loading media on apps such as twitter, etc. Issue was only on my Android devices and only on Eir wifi.

Ultimately disabling IPv6 on my Eir box did the trick.

    Great find.

    Thanks for that.

I disabled IPv6, rebooted the android and now apps that were very slow loading are much improved.

Nice one folks, will give the IPv6 disablement a try!

Been having this issue too. I might turn off the ipv6 as advised above as I'm sure that'll sort the issue too, but is there any potential flaws or harm in doing so?

Sorry guys I'm having this issue on the f3000 router and I'm struggling to follow the guide.

Has anyone a guide or a way of resolving this on the F3000 it's just my Android devices affected it seems.
