A great player, watched videos of him last night and it brought back memories. A big tough footballer with skill to burn. you're right about him being a bit grumpy though, I remember a group of us teenagers annoying him in the stands in Portlaoise during a game and he lost the head.

As a child/teenager, Brian Mullins was the player we all loved to hate. And by "we", I mean all non-Dubs.

He was big, intelligent, skilful and hard as nails. The sort of player you'd love to have on your side, but hated when he played for the opposition.

But the older I got the more I realised how great he truly was.

I watched the 1975 All-Ireland final a good number of years ago (not recommended, a brutally bad game of football) and my overall impression was there were 29 players on the pitch who just hoofed the ball anywhere and hoped for the best and just one who thought kicking the ball to someone wearing the same colour jersey as him was a good idea. That man was obviously Brian Mullins. And I think he was only 20 at the time, surrounded by loads of historically highly-regarded footballers.

The fact that he returned to top class football and won an All-Ireland after a very serious car crash speaks volumes about his character too.

Very sad loss. RIP big man.

Taken out Talty in the tunnel at half time in an all Ireland final will always be a blemish on a great career.

The final of the 12 apostles, I remember it well.

    Great day.

He "took Talty out" on the pitch. In front of everyone. And got sent off for it.

Attacked him in the tunnel also...... Talty didn't return for second half.

There was a scuffle in the tunnel involving a lot of players. I don't know how you can single out Mullins and Talty.

Talty was concussed already from the on-field blow and the medics decided not to let him out for the second half. That's from Talty himself in an interview I read. I'm sure Google will help you there.

They were also friends and I always thought Mullins went back to Talty after being sent off and gave him a tap as if to say sorry.

Edit: Got the video. I was right about the 'sorry' bit.

From looking at the video, Talty caught him around the waist with his left hand to stop Mullins going for the ball. And then gave him a little dig with the right hand. You'll get situations like that where if you are the perpretator, you will do it against some people who won't see red and will just try to shrug you off without too much aggression. Or other times (like this case), you'll get someone who will swing back with aggression without thinking of the consequences. I'm not saying Talty deserved to be concussed, but he did initiate the come-together.

    I agree.

From the second angle, you can see Talty throwing his right hand at Mullins, which Mullins reacted to.

Not condoning it, but that's what happened.
