Leap Card - Dublin to Cork Irish Rail

Can anyone please tell me if I can use my Young Adult Leap Card on the Dublin to Cork train service or if there is any way to reduce ticket prices for a 19 year old who is not a student?

Had a similar issue last week for a student whos 18 and has a 16-18 year old leap card , we just put in her sisters student number and bought online - no checking anywhere once you have a ticket

Thanks, so it's ok to use the leap card for the Dublin to Cork train - I just want to make sure that the trip is eligible and that it's not just usable for trips around the Dublin area?

You can use the Student/Young adult to verify you are eligible for the student ticket, you can't pay for the fare using a leap card however

You can't buy student tickets with the Young Adult card, as you can get that card without being a 3rd level student.

It's a very odd thing Irish Rail seem to be doing based on what P_Huagh posted above and is very much an exception to the norm. You would not be provided this with other companies. It's actually a problem right now with the services that have expanded student ticketing, but there are students who can't get the required student leap cards.

ID Card Requirements

Iarnród Éireann Irish Rail Young Adult / Student Intercity Tickets are available to anyone in possession of one of the following ID types:

• Valid National and International Student ID Cards 
• Trinity College Dublin Digital Student ID Card 
• Young Adult Leap Card (19 - 23 years)
• TFI Student Leap Card
• International Student Identity Card (ISIC) and ISIC virtual app 

If she had none of those then you would have lost your day in court and ended up paying much more.

AFAIR IE have never accepted random student IDs, in my day it had to be an ISIC with additional CIE sticker on back which was an extra cost.

It isn't up to you to dictate what documents they accept in order to qualify for reduced rate fares.

Bus Eireann and most of the private operators do accept college IDs, when I was driving it was the case and it was completely impossible to determine if you were being shown a valid ID, far too many colleges all with different designs and formats.

Anyone asking for student tickets was asked for student IDs, as long as they showed me something, literally anything, they got a student ticket, even that low bar was too much for many of them to achieve.

What possible issue could a 22 yr old (Student or Not) have getting a Young Adult card ??? , No Student ID is required

Young Persons/Student Leap Card is the only show in town going forward - Citylink no longer takes anything else.

When I were a lad, there were also students who were much younger than 22. Students who fall out of catchment for the young adult and student cards are unable to get the student fares. With the appearent exception of Irish Rail.

That is an issue about the commercial bus companies who are now accepting the new Young Adult LEAP Card as it only starts from the age of 19, and thus 18 year olds who are at third level colleges are not able to get the 50% discount on those commercial services that this card offers.

The Child (16-18) LEAP Card gives a 50% discount on fares on PSO services for 16-18 year olds, which covers Iarnród Éireann.
