Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Trying to troubleshoot an issue

I'm having an issue with my gas central heating. I have a control panel on the wall that allows me to control the radiators (just one zone) and the hot water seperately. When I turn on both I'm getting hot water with no issue but the radiators aren't heating up. I have checked the thermostat (mounted to a wall in the hall) and it is set above 20 degrees so should be allowing the heat to come on.

There are two valves set to auto beside the boiler. I switched both of them to manual out of desperation last night and the radiators started heating immediately.

The reason I'm asking on this forum is that I've booked a visit to install Hive which is due in a couple of weeks. There was an 8 week wait but that is a rant for another day. Does it sound like the termostat could be at fault? If so, I'll hang on until the new kit arrives which would make the current thermostat redundant. I know the odds of anyone being able to answer this might be remote but thought I'd give it a try before I call in the professionals.

Apologies for what might be a silly question but if anyone had any guidance I'd appreciate it, thanks.

Have you tried turning up the thermostats? You say they are above 20 degrees , but how much above are they?

I would turn them up high just for a test.

Another thing to check is the valves as motorized valves can stick if they have not been used for a while.

Thanks for coming back to me. I've whacked the thermostat up as high as it will go but still no joy.

I'm thinking at this stage I'll wait out the hive install to rule out the thermostat.

So you have 2 valves, 1 for hw the other for rads? Presumably when you jack up the stat for water? Or turn it on,one of the valves operates, get someone to turn on water while you watch valves, see which one turns on? That should be the water,if fitted correctly. You could try remove the other valve actuator and operate the valvr manually to see is it stuck, or see if actuator functions when removed. Mark each actuator assy before removing, if valve unit/body for actuator moves freely using a spanner, you could try fit hw actuator onto it if it reaches and test rad wet circuit using hw stat. This would be to confirm, sounds to me like rad actuator faulty,or not getting power,is the room stat mechanical? If electronic but powered by AA batteries, are the batt new? Does stat click when operated?/temp increase? If mech could test with multimeter.

Thanks for the suggestions folks. I had checked to see if there was any clicking when I rotated the stat dial but there was nothing.

I had the hive system installed today and that confirmed that the stat wasn't working. Thankfully that means my heating is now back up and running.
