Any way to tell the difference between these two?

Can you buy bags of sharp sand in hardware shop in say 25kg bags or is it by the tonne only?

Also, plastic edging or metal - or does it make a difference?

    Thanks for any info

Sharp sand as the name says has sharp grains of sand where as the sand grains in mortar sand are rounder. The result when brick or block laying with mortar sand is that its easier to push the block into the mortar mix. A mix with sharp sand binds together tighter so won't be as "plastic" when handled.

However sand seems to be sand to many builders and rendering sand which is somewhat sharp is often used for everything.

Wake me up when it's all over.
