    Hi

    Hope someone could advice

We have a pug is going to be on a long term high steroid dose.

As a result he will start to lose his hair , we know this because there was a trial a few months ago of the high dose to ease his symptoms which it did but he began to lose hair and growth stopped. He was weaned off the high dose and the hair started to grow again.

Unfortunately his symptoms returned ,so he has been put back on the high dose until end of his life .

So looking to get shampoo that won't cause too much discomfort , he already has a lot of bald patches ,which will only get bigger in the coming months.

    Thanks in advance

Ah jayney, the poor fella... sorry to hear he's not well and having to go through all of this, although it's probably harder for you than it is on him 🥺

I'd imagine a good groomer would be able to give you advice on what shampoos and skin care products would be of benefit, if it’s possible to fight the effects of the high steroid doses. I suspect there's not much you can do to get hair growth restored whilst he's on the meds, unfortunately.

SillymangoX is one of our regular posters who's a groomer, hopefully she or another groomer will be passing by here soon and will give some insight!

    Thanks for reply

Once an episode passes he is fine and probably doesn't even remember , but it's tough to watch .

Unfortunately he will be on the meds until the end so we want to make sure he doesn't develop any skin infections etc because of hair loss .

Thanks for thinking of me DBB!

Thats a rough one, while it’s great to have medication that works it’s not fun to have those side effects!

Id recommend going for a nice mild shampoo so you won’t end up irritating the skin, something like the k9 competition range would be a very good shampoo while still being mild.

This one in particular is very good for strengthening and repairing damaged coats, so could help keep what he has left strong and healthy! https://www.mullinahonecoop.ie/collections/shampoo-conditioner/products/k9-keratin-moisture-shampoo

another thing you could look into would be nagayu hydrotherapy, either a groomer that offers this service or you can get the shower head and tablets and use them yourself at home. Here’s a link to where you can buy them, and a link to the website describing the benefits of it!

Just a follow up to this...he sadly passed away last Thursday...the steroids didn't work this time.

It was all so sudden. He went to sleep in our arms last Thursday, it was heartbreaking but such a beautiful moment .

It's been a struggle since , everything is surreal . We know in time the pain will ease but we also know we will never forget him and the impact he had on us in just 5 years. He changed us forever .

This is the last photo of Pug from last Wednesday , we had no idea it would be our last.
