Hi, my 2008 Passat, diesel, is making a strange chuckling metallic sound. Anyone recognise what this sound might indicate? Not good news I assume!
thanks for any help
Not working for me.
Sounds like serpentine belt, tensioner or idler pulley squealing.
thanks, do you think it’s something to worry about?
Does it change when you switch on/off the ac?
Yes, I just tried this and the AC seems to make It happen. Hadn’t realised, thank you. Any idea what it is? AC related?
No, turning on the AC just puts more pressure on the aux belt so will change the noise.
Probably best to get it checked at some point, it isn't going to get better on its own and if a bearing collapses or the belt snaps it would be an annoying breakdown
It's likely the alternator pulley seized. If it isn't the ac compressor.
Thanks both, both of these aux belt and pulley seem expensive fixes. I recently brought out to get a service because it was leaking a little oil. Was told it’s the gearbox and I should get it replaced, that it would be worth getting the clutch replaced too. It’s a 2008 diesel, 380,000km. It looks in great shape but im worried it’s going to swallow money up with constant fixes. Can’t bring myself to scrap it though!
380,000km!!!!! that's a lot.
Didnt think VWs last that long.
Go onto donedeal and filter out anything with less than 350k km.
Lots of fords and toyotas but there must be more vag group cars than anything else.
You first need root cause. The belt may be new or old. It might need an altenator, AC compressor or other pulley or part. Mechanics sometimes use a solid bar and listen to noises at each location to try localise the root cause of the noise.
You could ignore it but maybe a stitch in time ...
had a 07 golf that lasted to nearly 500,000 miles :P
did you replace the engine or transmission? what transmission?
Thanks everyone, I’m moving abroad for two years and was planning to hold onto it for when I get home, hope to come home a lot. Though I’m worried about spending so much on a gearbox, clutch, potential belt issue only for everything else to start faulting too. Someone once advised when buying it to not spend any money on it, that it could become a pit! Love the car though 😢
