Cheapest way to heat our water tank?

    Hi,

We’ve always used our piped gas supply to heat our water as we can do so via a timer both in winter & summer. We were advised that this was the cheapest way to get hot water, and no doubt it was up to now!

We’ve just switched to Energia & have requested a day/night meter (will use it to charge our EV etc). Am just wondering if we’d be better off to get a timer on our immersion & use it to heat our water at the cheaper night rate instead of using our gas supply to heat the hot water tank?

    Would appreciate your thoughts 😊

Mutiply the gas cost per kwh X 1.2, if the cost per elect kwh (night rate) is < this then elect is cheaper.

    Hi John,

Many thanks for that info. We’re with Flogas for our gas & the rate per kWh is 11.04 incl vat. Going by your suggestion of multiplying the gas cost by 1.2, it works out at 13.248. Energia’s night rate is 9.73 including vat so it looks like the immersion would be the cheaper option?

Yes, certainly looks that way allright, its amazing that the night rate is only 1/3rd of the day rate cost.
