Switch from Pure to Vodafone - Continue using Fritzbox?

    Hi,

I'm thinking of switching from Pure Openeir FTTH to Vodafone as my 12 month contract is nearly up and the Pure re-contract offers are too high.

Could someone tell me if it's possible to continue using the Fritzboxs I have with Vodafone instead of what they provide?

    Thanks

Absolutely, and I'd recommend it over the Gigabox rubbish. You'd just need to change the username and password in the Internet > Account Information section. Some will say you need to lift the details from the Gigabox but I've never had any problem with vodafone@vodafone.ie as the username and broadband as the password.

Great stuff, good to know, thanks. I've had Fritzboxes for the past few years and find them excellent so was hoping to not have to use anything else.

The only issue is that Pure might charge you for the Fritz if you don't return it.

As Glaceon have said Pure will charge you if you don't return the Fritzbox but to be honest I wouldn't really mind that all that much if it meant you could reuse it for a few years. I've also never tried buying from them but I was looking at picking up a second Frtizbox recently and CEX had them for 52e second hand. My sister moved house recently and Pure charged her 80e for non return of the modem despite them activating service with Pure in the new house and bringing the same modem with them so I'd assume the non return fee from them is 80e.

Oh, I never thought of that.

I have 2 Fritz 7530s, one of which I got from Pure, the other I own and am currently using as a WiFI mesh so I could just use that.

I thought pure only took back the equipment if you left the contract early.

pure didnt ask for fritzbox back from myself after being with them a year and moving to a different provider, nor have they charged me for it since then (left them months ago, but also they stated in writing to me that they didnt want it sent back)

New Voda Fibre connection here - So please can I ask - do I just plug a Fritz Box into the Fibre (Wall mounted Unit) - and bypass the Vodafone Gigabox - then set the Fritz box to use the username/password

    OR

Do I still need to use the Gigabox - thanks

option 1, no need for gigabox

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,661 ✭✭✭savemejebus

Unless you are using the phoneline, right? In that case it would be plug the cable from the ont (fibre) into the gigabox. Then phone cable into gigabox and lan cable from the gigabox into the wan port on the fritzbox and switch off the wifi on the gigabox.

Or am i getting it wrong?

It would work but you’d have double NAT which is not ideal. The best way would be to use a small managed switch (with VLAN 10 tagged) connected to the ONT and then connect the WAN ports of both into that switch.

So I guess that Voda would not give out the SIP details for a phone line - but the Managed IP Switch solution sounds good

Would it be double NAT even if the gigabox is in bridge mode ?

If the gigabox is in bridge mode would the VoIP line work ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,399 ✭✭✭Glaceon

If it was bridged then no, but I don’t think the phone would work.

Does it have to be tagged on the switch, would it not pass everything through anyway? I tested it out a while back with an unmanaged switch and from what I recall it also worked once both routers were tagged.

I'll try it out - If the Voda Router just handles the VoIP and the Fritz handles WiFi and LAN connections then maybe that will resolve it for me !

    Thanks for assistance

I ordered vodafone 500M Fiber, I am renting and the apartment has boxes from NTL and UPC. I think previous tenant had Virgin Media cable. Does any of you know what would be needed to be done on the apartment?

I have to talk with the landlord if Vodafone needs to do any works. I asked to Vodafone, but it seems that I have to wait until the installer comes to take a look. I am afraid of having to wait until then just to realise that it needs to put any cable on my apartment and the landlord will not approve.

They'll need to install fibre in the building. I had it at an older house and they had to drill a hole from the outside in to feed it through. So you probably will need permission from the landlord for it.

So I got the 1GB working from Vodafone - 100 MB Upload - thinking of eventually going to the 2GB but not today or tomorrow.

Have moved (thanks for the advice) the Analogue Line to irishvoip.com and at €24 odd for the year (Plus calls) it's great value - this means I do not need the Vodafone router in place and can plug my own Fritz boxes directly into the Fibre->LAN Wall box.

    Thanks for assistance !

Out of curiosity, Was there any answer to this? If both routers can handle vlan 10 would the switch need to?

The switch does not need to VLAN tag if both routers are VLAN capable. Any generic gigabit switch should work.

There were cases where a VLAN capable switch was needed, specifically with the Google Nest mesh devices. People seem to have read that here and assumed, incorrectly, that a managed VLAN capable switch was required in all instances.

It's the way I've always done it in a professional setting. Desk phones are often put on a separate VLAN and in that case I'd have the VLAN specified on the firewall, then each downstream switch has that VLAN tagged on it. I never tried it with an unmanaged switch so can't say if it works or not, I've just always been given managed switches for anything VLAN related.

Sorry to hijack this thread but just completed the move from pure to vodafone myself. Set gigabox up to make sure that everything was working as it should and then tried to replace it with fritzbox. Entered the username, pass etc and set vlan to 10 but it just won't work. Just get the message "The internet connection check failed. The reason for the error could not be determined."

    Anyone encountered this?

EDIT hard reboot (fully unplugged for a minute) fixed it

Anyone I've asked says putting a GigaBox in to Bridge mode will brick it. Is there any grounds for this claim ?

There's a thread on Boards about it but it dates back to 2012 I think.

I have a UniFi USG that I want to use for all my config and for better VPN and more configurable WiFi setup but to work properly I need the Vodafone box in Bridge mode.

I've held of doing anything until I can be sure It won't crap itself. I don't really want to go spending money on a "better" router when all I want it for is Bridging to the USG.

    Thanks
