To tee or not to tee - on Par threes?

It kinda hit me over the weekend that my irons on long par threes (3,4,5 iron range) are not as accurate as I hit them from the fairway. I always use a tee on long par threes - albeit down low - but there is no consistency (left, right, short, long...). When on the range I would never use a tee for long irons and on the course I wouldn't necessarily be knocking my second shot with a 3/4/5 iron on the green every time but it typically would not be as far away as I'm seeing on par threes.

My friend Google has loads of stuff on the pros and cons of teeing up for par threes! But I'm interested in thoughts from others here...do you tee it up or not on long par threes?

Jack nicklaus always said that amateurs should tee up on par 3s. If it's good enough for the Greatest. It's good enough for me 😀

I only use a tee with driver.

Par 3s or iron off tee box i hit off the ground.

Found no consistency with it teed up

The "new" format of Boards is not great when it comes to searching but this came up for me OP

You're always allowed to play from the ground whereas you're only allowed to use a tee once each hole. Maybe I'm suspicious by nature, but I reckon they don't let you use a tee for every shot because a tee is an advantage. So I use a tee just in case.

Have tried both but always tee it up now, better consistently, our tee boxes aren't great either so it makes sense.

Nope, playing off the ground on a par 3 tee box can be barred through local rule, rightly/wrongly

I once heard Gary Player there's a reason you can only Tee it up once on a hole! (its an advantage)

tee it up everytime, it gives you a much better chance of a clean strike

For those who think that teeing it up makes for a worse more inconsistent shot……. Review how you are teeing it up.

My guess if you have problems with tee’d up irons you probably have them tee’d to high

If you're teeing it up though (even if low), do you aim to strke down on the ball as if you are on the fairway?

Yes. You don't tee it up to catch it on the upswing like a driver (if you are hitting irons or hybrids). It should look as if it's resting on the tips of the short blades of grass.

Then why tee it up and not just find a suitable lie on the tee box?

Nice little video on it with some good information.

Yeah, this might be my issue. I never take a divot from the tee whereas from the fairway I usually would. Maybe I'm catching the ball on my upswing. Probably focusing on getting a clean strike rather than replicating my usually fairway shots.

    @spacecoyote , good video - thanks!
