Subsistence - Unsure Of Claim

    Hi.

I am being sent on a conference in the States next month and am a bit unclear on how claiming subsistence works.

This is the first time really I've ever been away for work so am a little unsure of the protocol.

I am flying on a Saturday and returning again the following Thursday. I paid for both the flights and accommodation on my own credit card & work reimbursed me the full cost.

I'm just wondering in terms of food for example whilst abroad - how does it typically work in an organisation re claiming for that? Breakfast is included with the hotel but in terms of other meals for the days I am there - is it usually a matter of keeping receipts and claiming based on that (just wondering what the typical situation is as no doubt not every company is the same)? 3 meals a day in the States at the moment would add up quick enough :-)

I am assuming the civil service overnight rate does not apply in my case as the company has already paid for my hotel?

    TIA for any advice.

It depends, some companies pay subsistence costs based on the employee keeping and providing receipts.

Otherwise you might be able to claim a day allowance.

They should have a policy, so best to ask a manager or HR what way they do things.
