    Hi,

I am about to replace 2 tyres of my Lexus IS 300h(225/45/R17) and was going through different options. Goodyear eagle F1 asyemetric 6 is the one I think to go with. Highly helpful if someone can share personal experience with them. Any other alternatives are also appreciated.

and I am planning to buy from the tyreleader.ie and to get it fitted from Lexus or Toyota.

Michelin Pilot Sport 4 are very good.

Highly doubtful that Lexus or Toyota will fit the tyres for you. Even local tyre shops don't want to fit tyres that aren’t supplied by them

Both eagle F1 and pilot sport 4 are great tyres. The latter seems to get slightly better reviews I'm my experience.

As said it's very unlikely a main dealer or even high street tyre place will fit your own supplied tyres.

If your in the Dublin/wicklow area drop me a PM I might be able to look after you.

Do you get uneven wear on yours?

Nothing particularly but the inner seems to be slightly more comparing to the middle and outer. To be specific for one tyre - 3, 2.7 and 2.5 is the remaining depth

FWIW I have the Asymetric 6 on my Skoda and find them a great tyre. Even the cheaper GY Efficient grip Performance would be well suited to the 300h, would be quieter cheaper and longer wearing, ultimately aren’t quite as grippy in extreme helmsmanship circumstances as the Asymetrics but it’s pretty marginal. If you drive the car hard it’s prob paying the extra for the As6, otherwise don’t bother.

Thanks colm_mcm. The price of Efficient grip performance is almost similar to the Asymetric 6.

    It’s a no-brainer in that case.

I have a 300H with the same wheels/tyre size as yours.

Outside of the usual performance, noise, wet grip and efficiency metrics, etc, I found an even more important one: Tyre skip.

FWD drive cars don't suffer from this but some AWD and RWD cars do and my IS300H did - and badly - on Dunlop Sport MAXX rt2s. Typically, this was when I was manouvering at low speed on full lock - say pulling out of a parking space. I would hear and feel a "thunk" as the tyre blocks gave up their grip and skipped back into place. This wasn't because of excessive speed - it's caused by the front wheels not being parallel when on full lock. As the car moves, the tyre blocks are stretched until they give up and skip back to position. I replaced the Dunlops with Bridgestone Turanza T005s and I don't have tyre skip anymore. If you look at the thread pattern on the 2 tyres, there isn't a huge difference but the difference for me is huge - some passengers would even ask if I'd driven over something (or someone!) when the skip happened.

In another forum, I got lots of flack for recommending the Bridgestones because apparently they are not a Ultra High Performance (UHP) tyre even though they claim to be. All I can say is that they perform fine for me and high performance (or even ultra high performance) isn't something anyone should be interested in uf they have an IS300H - they're more for cruising.

Pilot Sport 4 is a great tyre, I don't think you could go wrong with the Eagle F1 either, Pirelli P Zero is also usually grouped into the mix. I've only used the PS4 but in my experience the extra cost up front is offset by them lasting decent mileage, plus wet grip is fantastic. The Pilot Sport 5 is better in every way if you can find them although I've noticed Michelin tyres have gone up a fair bit in price so you might be sticking with Goodyear or Pirelli.

In my experience when I was shopping around for Pilot Sport 4 several tyre places said it would be €30 per tyre fitting, only one or two wouldn't fit them but most places had no problem, they're still making their money.

Thanks everyone. I decided to go with GY Eagle F1. I hope it will prove to be a good choice

What price are you getting on the Asymmetric 6? 17” wheels?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 139 ✭✭Rainislove

125 each from the lexus dealer. I byte the bullet and decided to buy from them. Is the price a bit higher?

Only a brief drive in it today but the steering felt a little heavier .. pretty good for a car with lifeless electric steering ..

Bit late now but I've been using Uniroyal rainsport 5 tyres on my IS300H for a good while now and find them to be excellent tyres for Irish driving conditions.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,367 ✭✭✭DaveyDave

I have seen other posters mention good things about Uniroyal in the past, definitely an ideal tyre for our usual conditions alright and one to consider.

I heard a few negative comments about the noise. What is in your experience

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

That’s a good price for them. I was quoted €136 for same ones in that size from medium sized town tyre shop during the week.

Looks like I got a bit of a bargain so ..

    You did well!

Haven't found them any noisier than other tyres I had on the car. The car came with a set of Dunlop Sportmaxx, which were fine bar the skipping at low speeds. Had Goodyears on it at one stage too and those were also skipping at low speed on heavy lock. The Uniroyals must be a little bit of a softer compound as they don't skip. Tyre wear has been good too, I'd recommend them.
