Just wondering why our government can't simply impose energy price caps like they did on landlords....

    Bit hypocritical, no?

Energy price caps don't reduce demand. There's going to be a gas shortage in Europe this Winter, demand for gas has to be reduced somewhat (hopefully in a controlled way rather than blackouts etc.). Keeping demand higher than it could be will just keep prices high, and make the problem worse for longer. Other European countries have already taken measures to reduce demand - maximum heating levels, lighting on public buildings etc.

Caps just mean that taxpayers start paying electricity bills for everyone above a certain point. It's fairly blunt, and doesn't really take into account anybody's ability to pay.
