New crown with metal showing

I've had a crown fitted today. I acknowledged the dangers of having the option to see the metal in time in the event that my gums reseeded and so on, but I am frustrated that this is now the situation all along and not right at the top as picture shows. I questioned this and was informed the main strategy for getting around it was to pay for a full porcelain crown. I was simply contemplating whether this looks typical or whether the crown isn't fitted appropriately. NE Calgary dentist

So you were warned in advance that metal may be visible, acknowledge that you were offered an alternative full porcelain crown where this would not be a problem, and declined it. What is your issue?

The type of crown you opted for is a “bonded crown”, it has a metal substructure with a thin layer of porcelain bonded over it. What you are seeing is the margin where both the metal and porcelain end, and the tooth begins. Had you opted for a better Lava/Emax/Procera crown, this would not be a problem as there is no metal in these crowns, but they cost more.
