Was a time when you could go into USIT in Dublin and sit down with their person and they could go through all the long haul destinations and their prices.

You would think online would be simpler, but I dont necessarily find it so.

In Europe, its very simple - the Ryanair fare finder function is brill.

    For outside Europe, not obvious.

For example - is there anywhere long haul I can fly from Dublin for less than 400 return? 500 return?

Expedia etc just lets you look location by location. Even Aer Lingus has fairly poor search functionality - there is no obvious way of knowing where they fly to.

    skyscanner any good?

    not really

firstly their prices are often fake, or wrong...

second, you need to look up by destination.

What I am looking for is - whats the cheapest way to fly to Asia, or Africa, from Dublin....for example. Anywhere long haul really except North America, which is easy enough to find.

Yes - you just need to put in a bit of work. Trailfinders website also shows deals to various destinations but ‘from’ is very important. Flying mid week can be cheaper to holiday destinations than at weekends. Christmas, Easter, Half terms, and July//August will be more expensive.

i think it is better to have an idea of where you want to go and be flexible on dates. Also need to be aware of the cost of hotels in the destination and the weather season. For example you may get a great deal (flight and accommodation) and then be looking at a monsoon out of the window.

I would also suggest Skyscanner but would try to book directly with the airline or with Expedia which I found to be ok.

But I guess thats my whole point.

I am to some extent agnostic about where and when I go - I want to fly for below a certain fare.

Yes, I can look up each individual destination by each and every day out and day back - but that really is more than a bit of work, thats millions of possible outcomes.

Google Flights looks excellent, thanks very much. Did not know it was there.

You can get to Bangkok for that kind of money. Once you start searching you will start getting pop up ads whether you want them or not. Often proves helpful

On skyscanner you can type from "dublin" to "everywhere" and that will give you a list of countries sorted by price. In date select "entire month" then "cheapest month" - it will give you a list of countries sorted by price

You can add a continent (ie South America / Asia) as your destiantion on Google Flights. And then move around the map to see the deals. Although sometimes need to zoom in further to bring up some cities.

Just use Google flights - Dublin - anywhere using the map function. Buy from the airline.

Aer lingus has a great search option for this - https://discovery.aerlingus.com/ - lets you explore places by budget/dates etc.

You can plug in long haul for under 400 you get flights to Boston and New York for example

The danger with this is if you for example, skip one leg, the remainder of the trip will be cancelled (legacy airlines) and if you're a member of a frequent flyer program they may suspend your account. For a once off, there probably wouldn't be any problems, but if you make a habit of it, you could be in trouble.

https://jacksflightclub.com/ occasionally have long haul deals from Dublin. The dates are usually very restrictive though, so you would need to be able to pick up and go.

Secretflying explained it well. Use a VPN. Goto expedia.hk. book there.

    I reallly enjoyed that trip

I use Google Flights. Seem to work much better on a laptop than ipad / phone. I put in Dublin and the dates, leave the location black and it shows me on the map where I can go and for how much. Got €400 return to Beijing in 2019 from that.
