Maybe they would not be able to speak as detailed as us humans but just imagine your dog or cat saying Mammy food or Need water Daddy or oh **** I just crapped myself Mammy/Daddy.

Or the animals on the farm or in the zoo telling the farmer or zookeeper how they were feeling or what they needed.

anyone who works or farms with animals knows exactly what they need or are looking for...i can walk into my stable yard and know instantly by looking at the horses if there are any issues or what they're looking for...you learn to "read" animal when you're immersed with them daily...in fact it's always interesing to watch how people who are not around animals much interact with them...they miss so many cues and all the animal signals go right over their heads...guess thats why so many people get bitten by dogs or attacked by herds of cows...

Exactly, differences in the brain and vocal cords rule out having conversations with your pet in our language, barring unethical genetic engineering at a minimum. Even at that they'd be unlikely to understand our naval gazing, stressors or humour so they'd probably think we were incredibly odd.

@bb12 hit the nail on the head, if you spend enough time around a particular animal you can understand them, and them you, without the need for a common language.
