Is this worth keeping?

We bought a house and seem to have inherited some sort of water softening/purification system. Firstly, we're wondering if it was ever any good in the first place, and if so, is it actually still any use if (presumably) it hasn't been serviced in years?

As far as I can tell there's actually 2 separate systems. On the outside of the house is an Ionics water softener, and under the kitchen sink is some sort of purification system. The kitchen tap has a third knob, presumably for the purified water?

There's a service number on the outside cover of the softener system, but the number is no longer in service. There's a brine tank which I think is supposed to be full of salt, but there's none at all in it. If the system is worth keeping, who should we contact about servicing it? Any advice or general info welcom.

That’s quite an old water softener (about 20 years old)

If it works leave it alone, parts aren’t available for it anymore.

Put a bag of salt into it, and see if lime appears in the system.

The unit outside is a water softener and the under counter unit looks like a Reverse osmosis water filter system.

As the poster above said put a bag of salt in it, and see if the salt is used over a week. A manual regeneration may be required initially. A google search shows the owner manual is still available on line if you need. Boil a few kettles of water and it will quickly tell you if the water to the tap is soft or not.

Regarding the RO unit, a filter change would be required.

Ring a few local water treatment companies and ask them for a service price. A new softener and RO unit look to be 900+ ish euro including install.
