Opened a steam press iron, didn't touch the electrics, now it's tripping breaker

I open an old steam press iron to remove and repair a problem in the water tank. I didn't touch the the electrics and now it's tripping the breaker the moment it's plugged in, even before I turn it on. It's all perfectly dry inside. I left it a day to give any moisture that might have been there, a chance to dry out.

Is there something simple it could be or is it dead?

    Thanks

disconnect and tape up the wires going to the element, then see if it still trips.
