Hi I wanted to take a trip to Israel (Jerusalem) travelling by train to Istanbul and then flying from there to Jerusalem. My question is, Id obviously want to book the flight in advance but Im not sure how much time to give it for me to get from dublin to Istanbul by train. Any ideas? If anyone has completed a trip like this any advice you could offer would be great. Thanks.

    Hey OP

Not directly comparable but I did Dublin - London - Paris - Barcelona- Tangiers - Marrakesh by boat - train - Eurostar - TGV - RENFE - boat and ONCF a few years ago.

Took me just under four days in total. Great trip. Loved every bit of it.

Let me ask you a few questions about your trip: How long did it take, all in all? Did you travel by sleeper train or did you stay a few days in each location? And for your return journey did you simply fly back or did you retrace your steps so to speak?

    Hey santana75. No probs.

I left Dublin Port Saturday at 08:45. Arrived at Marrakesh train station around 16:00 the Tuesday. No sleepers. Spent each day travelling. I stayed with friends/in hotels in Paris, Barcelona and Tangiers as I was hooking up with people in each city.

Due to limited annual leave from work I flew home. Bounced back to Dublin from there via Madrid.

Hope that helps and good luck with your trip.

Be aware that many of the high speed trains require a reservation and many of the ones where reservations are optional are also fully booked due to the flight travel issues.

When I was young and foolish I took a cheap package holiday to Cyprus, stayed a few nights then took the ferry Limassol to Haifa in Israel. Bus from there to Jerusalem and various places for a few days. Then ferry back to Limassol and stayed in the package hotel before getting back to Dublin. It was a cheap way of doing it at the time. Israel fascinated me.

I know you want to take the train. Sorry for taking things "off track" but I can't help you with that unfortunately!

No thats actually quite helpful. I could get myself to cyprus then go from there to Israel. I did some rough calculations and I think I can make it to Athens(not Istanbul) in 7days, then fly from there to Jerusalem. Now I have to figure out the individual night train bookings/reservations. Theres a couple of whopper train journeys in there, like Budapest to Bucharest is 15 hours! I've never actually taken a sleeper train, do they have showers?

If you don't know about it already, have a look at Seat 61.com. It is a renowned website for all kinds of train travel and is very popular. It was set up by a guy who used to work for British Rail back in the day. It might answer the questions you might have about couchettes, showers etc. Worth a look anyway.
