I know this is simple but please could someone explain the differences between a power shuttle and a mechanical shuttle on a tractor?

Simplification, instead of your hand moving a lever that is mechanically connected to the forward / reverse selector in the gearbox, an electric / hydraulic solenoid does the job of your hand. This solenoid can be operated by a lever / button. There is no mechanical connection of the lever / button to the gearbox,it is via "power".

Thank you. So has the clutch to be pressed to change direction in both cases?

No, the clutch isn't needed with a power shuttle.

A power shuttle has 3 internal gearbox hydraulic clutch packs, forward, reverse & a main clutch drum. The forward and reverse are controlled by solenoids and the clutch by a potentiometer. There is no bell housing as such and a torsion damper is used instead of a clutch plate to transfer power to the gearbox from the engine.

A mechanical shuttle has a dry clutch and forward/reverse geared ranges.

One is simple and tiring and the other is expensive and comfortable

Op, if you only buy a massey for one reason, buy her for their electric power shuttle. What a dream massey have over other manufacturers with their's.
