*CLOSED* NO FURTHER REPLIES REQUIRED* Hi all, need some help. Looking at Irish names for when bump arrives this month..we have settled on Kayla if it's a girl but I'd like to spell it in an Irish way. Have seen it as Cadhla but I know that's also pronounced Ky-la.

Wondering if the correct way is with a fada? Cádhla?

I did see somewhere that Cádhla, pronounced Kay-la, is actually an old Irish translation of Ciara. Can anyone validate that?

For me, Cádhla would be pronounced Caawwla, I don't know how you'd get the 'ay' sound from á.

Maybe Cédhla? But I just made that up.

Is Kayla even an Irish name to start with?

It wouldn't strike me as such, so if you're going to Irish-ise it you can just make it up yourselves.

In recent times, parents have a habit of making up irish versions of names, or just names in general. Often with their own spelling.

Its like they want a totally unique name for their child.

Kayla is not an Irish name, there is no K in the Irish alphabet. It may have come from Michaela. I'm afraid pretending it's Irish might be seen as insulting to the Irish language. Any Gaeilgeoir here might give their opinion on this. Choose a real Irish name instead, there are lots of lovely names available. So, in that version, the ky part (Cadh) sound rhymes more closely, but not exactly with sky. The dh elongates and opens the Irish pronunciation of a non fada "a" from ah to ai and provides the y sound to the end of it. But really, it's entirely up you what to name your kid and how to spell that name. If you want to give a nod to the Irish language in the spelling but still pronounce it "Kayla", what harm? Might cause some pronunciation issues with teachers if going to school in Ireland but you can nip that in the bud quickly. And there are always regional differences. I'm basing that pronunciation on how it would be pronounced in Munster Irish. Could well be closer to Kayla in Ulster or Connaught dialects, for all I know. I know an Aoife who pronounces her name "ayfa", so pronunciation is not fixed in stone.
