    Hi All

my sons 131 reg 308 diesel limped home with funny things happening like wipers going on themselves. My son had reported power steering problems but I dont know

if that was so. Anyway bought a new battery, fitted it ,car started, son drove round all day. that night it would not restart. i reckoned the battery was still goood, but put a jump lead on it and it started,, But not since.

The ignition lights come on but when i put key to start position nothing happens, the ignition lights do not dim as i would expect. also the is a warning sign

lit up " economy mode activated". i did a google search and got various bits of info, but not exactly what i needed.

So off I went on foot to a local, capable garage. They told me instantly to disconnect the battery for 15 mins and all would be ok. Oh ,forgot to say that the windows ,cigar lighter and other things would not work.

All this had been talked of on Google.

So I did what they said. Still the starter does not work, but the econmy mode activated sign has gone and the windows work and the radio came on. Another sign is now illuminated, something about automatic door but i can't read the second line due to a fault in the screen ( the screen has had a straight line through it blurring it for the last 7 months or so)

On google I have learned how to do the Peugeot BSI reboot procedure, this may be what i've already done but i'm going to follow it.

Any other suggestions are welcome, thank you.

The real mystery for me is that I did jump start it the other day but it will not jump start now.

My suggestion would be forget about Google and try any decent mechanic. They can scan the car and read the codes. Google can't.

Maybe intermittent starter issue. Try giving starter motor a few taps on the body with a hammer and try jumping it then. Also make sure to check connections are clean.

Google can be a great help to give you some general insight. I did a quick search and discovered economy mode activated has got to do with battery drain say for example if bonnet or door is left open it will activate economy mode to try save the battery.

Did you check to see if the alternator was charging when you had it running?

    @rugbyman

I know i am bit late to the party . However i do know peugeots tend to give wierd issues after a low or dead battery . There are many possibilities why the car wont start . My advice is to get the car to a garage .

Its hard to do from an armchair . Could possibly a dead dead starter solinoid . Can you bump start the car ? Its best to rule out something else been the issue first . IF it does start then the most likely problem was the starter . They are a pain to do as the are high up at the back of the engine and a pain to remove .

If it doesnt start then you need to get it to a good mechanic . It could be a fault in the ECU preventing the ignition system from working . Fuses or relays could have blown or the BSI could have bit the bullet . Either way the car needs to be scanned for faults at that stage do a more indepth diag can begin .

Thank you all for your comments. i think anyone who poo poos google is wrong it is the most amazing tool ever and for most of my life it did not exist.

To get to the conclusion we towed it out of the garden, difficult in itself. car started with a tow, left it to a good indie garage, starter knackered and replaced, yes Cornholio its in an akward place. because it started with a jump while stranded in my garden(leaving me sure it was not a starter fault), that was obviously the last ever turn of its life.

the reason for its demise was oil falling on to it

    Regards

Many thanks for letting us know how it worked out, I'm assuming the oil leak was cured too. No harm lifting the bonnet on any car and casting an eye around for unusual looking stains etc, I do it with mine usually once a month (probably every six weeks to be truthful), haven't spotted anything yet but you never know. I did spot a leak starting at the water pump on a different car I had.
