Im looking for some general opinions on this breed as a family dog. I have heard that they are prone to health issues and they can shed a lot ( Ive seen different opinions on this), Im not sure if these means hoovering every day or not! Are they easy to train and most importantly how is its temperament with small kids? Thanks for any advice

Hi, I'm a cavalier owner and lover! So I'm on my 3rd cavalier. My first lived until 13, he passed in his sleep and had a relatively healthy life, I had him since he was a pup and got him from a family friend who had a litter.

My second was a rescue, she lived until 11,then she got cancer.

My 3rd is 2, so far so good. I should mention that I have her insured.

In terms of shedding, my first did abit but my second and third didn't or don't. You do need to brush regularly especially the ears as they become matted.

Temperant wise, mine were lovely, very playful although they bark!

I would recommend visiting the pups home, seeing its parents, check vet paper work etc. Unfortunately there are still some chancers carrying out unethical breeding.

Any other questions let me know!

Lovely little dogs! I've never met a mean one...

But I would second the recommendation for very carefully selecting a reputable breeder - which will mean a waiting list.

Also pet insurance from day one - they can suffer from heart and joint problems...

There is one specialised Cavalier rescue in Ireland, not sure if I can mention it by name, but if you google it, you'll find it.

Thanks for the replies. I have spoken to what seems to be a reputable breeder, Im not sure if i can mention them but they have cavaliers and ireland in their name :) Ive done alot of research since this post and seems this breed would be perfect for our family dynamic.

Are they a DBE Wingnut. They seem to carry a number of breeds?

    Re check the list.

Have you contacted the Cavalier Club of Ireland and asked for their advice?

They may be able to help with a breed enthuiast with puppies, though you might have to wait a bit longer as they not breed to order.
