Clutch Replacement; Cost and Recommendations

How much is reasonable to pay for a clutch replacement these days?

I called a place in Dublin recommended here before and was quoted nearly a grand, which seemed strong relative to guide prices posted here a few years ago.

They said it's a lot of work on that model of car, 2007 Honda Accord.

Would I be as well changing the gearbox at this stage if it has to come out anyway? There's nearly 200,000 km on the car.

Would waiting to replace the clutch increase wear on the gearbox and shorten its life?

The gears still engage but there's occasional grinding noises and short jerks or gaps in power delivery on acceleration.

If your clutch is starting to slip it could fail any time. It can also damage other parts or leave you stranded.

Try ringing a few back street garages. All should be able to quote

Personally if it's starting to slip I would be ringing today and getting right parts on order asap.

The price of everything has increased lately. Car parts are particularly more expensive due to Brexit and inflation.

Maybe shop around first but if €1,000 is in fact the going rate nowadays then you might consider continuing to drive it until it becomes annoying and maybe just sell the car at that point?

Is the car petrol or diesel? If it's diesel then the price may include replacing the flywheel as well as the clutch. €1k for a clutch and flywheel wound't be the worst price. As for the gearbox, unless there is an actual problem with it I wouldn't be changing it, if there is a problem then reconditioning it would be more cost effective than replacing it.

But realistically if your replacing/reconditioning the gearbox as well as needing to replace the clutch/flywheel also then you have to weight up is it worth that expense on a 15 year old car.

Sorry Bazz, should have said, it's petrol.

Cheers for the responses lads. I booked in my usual mechanic to have a look at it and I'll see what he recommends.

I take it it's not a job that needs a specialist?

I'd shop around then, while it might be a bit awkward to replace it shouldn't be a specialist's job to change a clutch on a petrol Accord. Joe the mechanic working from his shed at the back of his house might work out a bit cheaper than bringing it to a garage with rent and rates to pay as well as a number of staff on their wage bill.
