Drug use and homelessness

Excuse me if this sounds stupid but I thought it was an interesting topic given the misconception between the two. Many people think that hard drug use apart form alcohol and weed and hallucinogens is the primary cause of homelessness. I've read a few articles and watched a few YouTube videos however of some scientists who say that drugs by themselves don't cause homelessness but rather underlying trauma and drugs are a catalyst for self destruction.

Is this true? Apparently Dr. Carl Hart says that drugs considered addictive like heroin only have a 20% addiction rate and many can use them regularly while maintaining a family, go to their job, pay bills etc..

    Is this true or not?

It is clearly a far more complicated matter than has been supposed. So easy to equate incorrectly and to be judgmental.

And a need to differentiate btween circumstantial dependency and true addiction. If you are homeless then that alone leads to the need for some alleviation, which drugs as meds can give? A crutch. Which can be put aside when things improve. As opposed to full blown addiction.
