    Hi,

Im thinking of buying a new caravan in Germany and bringing it home to Ireland.

Does anyone know if there are VAT or Customs fees applicable when I get back to Ireland.

BTW - the make and model I'm after is not sold in Ireland. It is sold in the UK, but post Brexit I'd prefer to deal in the EU.

    Thanks

I dont believe there are any extra charges, due to the single market. I guess Revenue would know for sure. The only thing that might catch you out would be if vat could be due - revenue consider cars under 6 months old and/or with less thank 6000 KM as new, and require a vat payment on top of VRT. I think.

A caravan is just like any other commodity. If bought taxes paid in another EU country you just bring it home. Same as a washing machine or a new pair of shoes, for example.

    Hi Guys

Importing a new Motorhome from Germany

is just a licence for the Revenue to legal take your money !

    It's a minefield !

Vat / Vrt / plus a whole list of other taxes even though we are in the EU

Plus OMSP Open Market Selling Price a joke

If the Revenue don't know the make or model or value of your Motorhome

They get in touch with Irish Motorhome Dealers who tell them what price they would screw the potential buyer with an then the Revenue add their exagerated fees to and then you end up with it costing you more that if you had bought it here in Ireland

    European Market my backside !

    This country screws us

Importing a new means of transport is always going to be expensive, its not unique to Ireland.

I imported a secondhand camper from Germany and didn't find the process excessively onerous however plenty of research was done beforehand.

There is a question over the way that VRT is applied as a potential purchaser does not know their tax liabilities before they purchase which is contrary to the principle of taxation.
