Tooth Pain, emergency root canal and medical card HSE authorisation time.

I've a medical card. One incisor is in pain, I think from damage and is possibly infected.

Should I need a root canal and obviously this is an emergency, I know this is covered by a medical card. However, I read that the dentist must get authorised by the HSE prior to treatment. It said 6- weeks.

Since eating is difficult because the slightest pressure triggers pain, one would expect to be treated right away. My question is, is this process expedited or waivered for such situations or must one spend those weeks on pain killers eating out of the side of my mouth or opt for an extraction?

I'll pay for it myself if it's the case, even though it'll hit my pocket hard. I just want to know prior to going to the dentist tomorrow.
