HSE Aid Servicing, what do they do?

My mothers aids were not working as well as they should, they are regularly cleaned, tubes replaced and batteries changed.

I phone Tallaght Audiology where she got them about a year ago and they asked had they been serviced, I said yes and told them what I had been doing. They said you need to take them to service centre in Grange Gorman (or post them) and they would electronically service/program them.

We went to Grange Gorman (no appointment needed) dropped the aids in and got a call ten minutes later to say they were ready. They are now working perfectly. So I am wondering why an electronic devise would deteriorate over time or what they do with them to restore full functionality. Anyone know?
