    Hi all,

Its been a while since I have flown with aer lingus so want to check story with assigned seating. Planning trip to New York next spring and to book assigned seats will cost 100euro for 2 people return.

Can I still wait till 30 hours before travel and check in and pick my own seats and if so, has anyone experience of doing that lately going to NYC

    thanks in advance

Check in for US flights is 24 hours not 30. If you want to sit together, you'd be best booking seats prior to check in as seat assignments at check in will be subject to availability.

It is 24h before the flight that you can check in. You won’t be able to pick your own seats but will be assigned them. I refuse to pay for seats together and just take the chance. The closer to the 24h mark you ll check in - the better your chances are to get seats together. Now, traveling to States there is always a chance that you won’t be able to check in online. Happened to us few times for random reasons and you ll just have to get to the airport early to check in at the desk. You ll be better off spending that €100 in NY.

You can wait but what if only middle seats are left?

Middle seat is not necessarily that bad, not ideal but the flight is not that long. Put your headphones on and watch your ipad/read a book/etc. My mother in law flew from Shannon to Boston in May with Aer Lingus, she always pays for her seat and always picks aisle seat. Well, she said it was the worst flight in her life. Her seat was broken, person in front of her was reclined the whole flight even after flight attendant asked them to put it up (just for food services), there was other problems as well. Anyway, picking and paying for your seat does not guarantee a great experience. With the way prices has gone up now - I would spend that 100 euro on show/museum/nicer meal in NY but thats me. If sitting together is super important and you dont want to take a chance - pay for the seats and forget about it.

Thank you everyone for your responses. Hadnt realised it was 24 hours, good to know. Its a case of deciding if saving 100euro is worth the risk of not sitting together
