    if the branch is a little thicker than bar could you cut from two sides then break off if necessary?

    Yes, but you'll never get a clean cut. So if you're trying to retain the tree, it would hardly be advised.

    I would do two cuts. The first cut to remove the weight of the branch, about 25cm from the final cut.

    Then the second cut where you want the branch removed, ideally in one clean cut from the underside up.
