Hi all, I have a 2014 xtrail diesel, 80k on the clock. Was doing 300-500km per week the last while (few years) Car had very low mileage on it when I got it in 2017. Anyway, I won't be driving that distance per week anymore thank fu?$k!

So the next car I'm thinking of would be something small, just me and my kid on local spins and the very odd long journey, I'll wreck the xtrail with low mileage and cause DPF issues no doubt.

The xtrail is pretty nice, spotless really, Leathers, cameras, heated seats, park assist, all that crap I don't need. 1.6 DCI Tekna 5 Seats 128BHP 5DR, 2014. A few garages were very interested in it so I'll get something decent on a trade in.

So my real part of the question is what do folk think of the GOLF GTE Hybrid? Can't go fully electric as I'm in rented accommodation so charging would be an issue for me.

Ideally I'd like a swap or pay a few thousand on top for something nice. If any GOLF GTE owners here I'd love to hear your thoughts on them.

    Thanks

The Golf GTE is a plug in hybrid though. If your not able to charge it at home then I don't see the advantage in getting one over a full electric. Your basically just lugging around an extra battery you are not going to use. You would really need to plug it in regularly to get any benefit from the limited electric range so might as well just get a regular petrol Golf at that rate.

Also my thinking is that if your only trying to swap or through a few grand with your current car for a GTE then I just don't see the point. Why not just keep the X-Trail? As you said it's got very low mileage, you know it's history and it's not giving you any trouble up to this point. I'd only think about trading it if it actually starts causing you problems because of the way it's being used. Also GTE used prices are pretty strong so with a limited budget you will probably be looking at a high mileage example.

Haven’t got much of an opinion on weather you should change cars or not, but the Golf GTE is a great car that I would definitely recommend to anyone willing to plug it in every couple of days to charge. I’ve owned two of them.

Over what period of time did you own these 2 cars?

Just watched a video on YouTube, it's just a charge cable that goes to a 3 pin plug right? That case I'd be fine as I have a driveway and outside plug. I thought I'd need a big box thing wired directly to the mains of the house.

Anyway I'd love to hear more about your two cars @User1998 any recommendations as to the particular model etc?

Yeah, just make sure the charger comes with the car. If your budget can stretch I’d go with a 2017+ model. Technology is better, bigger infotainment screen and virtual dashboard, and overall looks a bit sportier. They seem to be €25k+ now, whereas I got mine for €20k two years ago.

I own a '21 GTE, they're a very nice car alright. However they're quite desirable lately and with inflation the price has skyrocketed.

You're probably looking at €25-30k for a 2017/18 with sub 100k on the clock.

Yeah very few of them here, might have a look in the UK and take the hit on the customs, VAT etc.

Any EV can be charged from any ordinary household outlet. If you know your daily commute and long trips you can get a full EV or a plug in hybrid.

There is a separate section for EV related questions but beware real world range is probably often less than claimed and when you go beyond home range you need to stop at a public charger to get home, public chargers are often busy, blocked or broken. While PHEV have an engine they typically have a tiny battery and short range, so you don't really save much on fuel costs compared to full EV. Do a lot of research and go in with eyes wide open.
