A lone garda car at the side of the road with just a single garda in the driving seat, no hair dryer type implement in his hand or pointed at me, i was doing 7kmph over the limit, my question is are there new methods to gauge speed in garda cars apart from the hand held hair dryers?

Was there a gadget attached to the patrol car? It might have looked like an external lamp, pointing in your direction.

No wonder you got caught - you haven't been paying attention. Patrol cars sitting in lay-bys with externally mounted speed detectors have been around for years. They're probably dual-purpose gadgets, they can be handheld or clipped onto the frame of an open car window. Either way, just because you can't see a cop pointing something at you doesn't mean you won't get caught.
