Audi A4 gearbox - mad to replace it?

Not so much DIY as fixing rather than dumping.

My approach to cars is to buy at 10 yrs, low mileage and well looked after. Cross fingers and run into the ground. My last A4 (1.8t B6) bought at 100k miles, stolen at 200K miles. Cost me about €600 a year in depreciation!

Have latest A4 (B7, 1.8t, 2007) 4 years and now has 120K miles up but the gearbox is whining.

    1. I know putting money into old cars is a fools errand. But this car is fresh and 2nd hands have leapt up in price of late. Madness to fix it?

    2. I understand a gearbox (and clutch) to cost about 1500. Anyone recommend a good gbox garage in Dublin (I'm in Bray) who also do loaners whilst your car is in?

    Thanks for any advice.

A used gearbox is probably 200, a clutch kit 250 and labour 250

Have you tried gearbox oil change?

Cheers. Sounds encouraging. How do you tell whether a used gearbox is a good 'un? Haven't tried an oil change, no. Could give it a whirl I suppose.

The A4 B6 is one of the best Audi's on the road, had 1.9 diesel one for years, clocked over 300k miles. You should be able to pick up a good gearbox in scrappie handy enough, look for a low mileage one & fit new clutch kit as said previously.

As has been said low miles is good, while your at it give the mech the new gear oil and clutch and flywheel. Misterauto for latter and comma oil guide to find out which gear oil you need. Personally Id try changing the gear oil in your old one first.
