Electric Ireland new build account rejected

I'm not sure if this is in the correct forum but feel free to move if not.

I got the keys to our new build house on Friday so on Monday morning I called Electric Ireland to get the account moved. I just selected the house move department. They said that because there was an overlap where I'd be in both houses, they set me up as a new customer with a new account number in the new house. I gave them the MPRN and all sounded good. I logged on to the online account yesterday only to find that the account was showing as closed, but I got an e-mail later in the day welcoming me so I ignored that.

Long story short, I get a call from Electric Ireland today to say that my account setup was rejected as there's already an account at that address with another supplier. Bear in mind that this house has never been lived in, it doesn't even have floors yet. She said they'll try it again but if it's rejected a second time, what can I do here?

I assume the new house has working electricity?

Did EI tell you who the 'other' supplier is?

If yes, try to talk to them and clarify what's going on. Is there a possibility your builder signed up?

If not, just wait and see who sends a bill.

FYI, if you move to a 'smart' meter electricity plan, you CAN'T move back to a non-smart plan.

You don't have to take a 'smart' meter if you don't want one, opt-out is available.

Buy drinks in 3L or bigger plastic bottles or glass bottles or cartons to avoid the DRS fee.

Yes, the electricity is fine otherwise. They said they had no visibility of the supplier or account name. Good point about the builder, I'll check with them.

Make sure to take a note of the units on the meter when you actually move in. The builder will be using electricity for their work so you'll be taking over the meter and moving the account when you're snag list is completed.

Don't go near any electric companies again till you are moving in.

The snag is already done, the sale has closed and we have the keys. So I’d imagine that it’s my responsibility now?

Your OP said it doesn't have floors so I assumed your snag wasn't completed. You just need to take note of the units from the meter then go to whichever supplier you want and set up an account.

I probably should have been clearer. There’s no carpet, wood, laminate or whatever else. Just the concrete base downstairs and a wooden one upstairs. I contacted the builder and am waiting to hear back. Otherwise I’ll just wait and see what bill comes in.

OK, I got an update from the builder. They had an account with Energia. Our contact in there got in touch with Energia who have confirmed that the account is closed. So hopefully that's all that happened here.

I heard nothing back from EI after the last call on the 6th so I called them again on Thursday. The rep who took my call said that the person who processed the application on the 6th used the wrong meter code (he went into some details that I didn't really understand) but that he'd correct the code and resubmit the application. But once again, the account is showing as closed online so I'm expecting to get another rejection call on Monday.

Am I doing something wrong here? When I moved into the house there was a letter from ESB Networks with the MPRN on it so I just called EI with that MPRN. Surely I don't have to stick with Energia?

They all show as closed for a day or two, so you should be fine.

Thanks. I checked again last night and the account is active so we're all good now.
