When is a crown really necessary?

Cracked a tooth recently and my dentist referred me to a specialist to get it root treated and a crown. Makes sense.

However, he also thinks I should get the tooth behind it crowned too as it is very heavily filled and it’s “better to get them done at the same time”.

The part that I’m confused about is why ? And why now? My dentist is very much an endorser of preserving what’s there rather than just repair and replace.

Is doing 2 crowns next each other a standard practice or is he likely just being overly cautious? Is it a higher risk only doing one at a time?

I only ask as each crown is very expensive, so I’d rather only fork out for the extra one if it’s definitely necessary.

I’ll probably get told to ask my dentist these questions, but I’d have better luck getting an appointment with the pope atm so here I am.

i got a root canal on a molar and never got it crowned its being going strong for years no issue at all! i also have one tooth that has a big filling no crown and 0 issues with it.

Its prob best to go with your dentists advice though or get a second opinion if you ve doubts.
