"Telecommunications operator Cellnex has said it has identified more than 200 potential blackspots around Ireland where poor mobile phone coverage is still a problem.

The company claims a subsidy of around €10 million from the Government would help deliver shared infrastructure, open to all mobile providers, at blackspot locations."

No mention of mapping and open tendering.

With the first generation of GSM networks, the operators would share mast access, so if your own phone provider didn’t provide coverage at a location, you could roam using the masts if other providers. Surely that would be a better option?

They should but Irish Operators don't, a minor reason because they don't have to.

Many years ago now, Vodafone removed a Mast in the middle of Connemara because, well, business is business, and Vodafone were'nt making enough revenue from it. The outcry was ignored.
