Flight cancelled due to strike but not much "strike" to be seen

Hi - my wife flew over to Nice on Thursday for a short break with some friends, due to fly back Sunday. On Friday afternoon she got a text from the airline to say there was a French air traffic controllers strike (is there any other kind of air traffic controller strike ?:) ) over the weekend and be warned of possible disruption. At 5.30pm she got a text to say her Sunday flight was cancelled. Now I have been watching departures from Nice airport over the weekend and almost all flights have departed, which bears out Ryanairs assertion that the strike was/is "poorly supported" ( https://www.irishmirror.ie/news/irish-news/ryanair-expect-flights-spain-france-27322118 ). The cancellation has been a major pain for us as she now is flying back one day late and has to travel by taxi/minibus for 5 hours to get her alternative flight.

I have applied for compensation under EU-261 rules but I suspect Aer Lingus will say the strike is a "extraordinary circumstance" under the rules (https://www.aerlingus.com/media/pdfs/LEGALCANCELLATION.pdf) - but thats not feasible is it given every other airline was able to get flights off the ground? As anyone ever seen this before?

I can only say that a similar thing happened to us a couple of years ago pre Covid. Coming back from Malaga Spain, and due to ATC strikes flight was cancelled. We were in the airport on the ramp near the door of the plane when told! Ryanair (their handlers on the ground Servisair) put us up in accommodation, arranged a taxi to the hotel, got meal vouchers and a taxi back to airport for re arranged flight. The only issue was the length of time in the Q at the airport waiting to be sorted.

So strikes must be covered under the provision you mention. I'm not sure, was just glad to get a bed and a re arranged flight TBH. Hope it works out for them.
