Aer Lingus Seats booked when buying flights online but not showing in booking confirmation

I rang Aer Lingus and they said the only way we can reserve seats now is pay extra or wait and see where we are allocated on the day.
Has this ever happened to anyone else, we definitely had the seats selected, I can even remember the seat numbers:)
