Looks like they let you take a 10kg bag for no extra charge but cant "carry it on". So we check it in as regular luggage, correct?

Yes that is correct, but what I want to know is, does it have to be the carry on bag size, or can it be any size once it doesn't exceed 10kg?

This is the process, as in it does not check the size, but typically they have a staff member swanning around checking the queue of people and helping them and they might say the bag is too big. On the conveyor there may also be a person who may reject an oversize bag. It's likely you might get away with it. The weight is checked twice, but it's hard for a computer to check the size. Personally I would not risk it. The main limit is the weight, which limits how much can go in anyway. With the queues the way they are it's more likely your bags and tickets will be reviewed by a human.
