What could have dented this part of my car?

Would anyone have any idea what might have caused this dent in my car? It's in a weird spot just in front of the wing mirror, driver's side. I can't imagine anything that's tough enough to make that dent but that wouldn't damage the paintwork.. There isn't a scratch to be seen. I'm the only driver and definitely never hit anything like a tree branch at any stage. It's about the size of a fist or tennis ball but neither would be strong enough to cause this.

The wing mirror is perfect as well.. very strange..

Maybe a sliotar or something like that?

Was it parked in a street at night?

Could be some idiot tried to karate kick the mirror and missed hitting the pillar.

Toll / carpark barrier? Toll barriers are usually cushion coated though.

You maybe surprised but a football hit hard enough could do that but it could always have been a foot too. I had some neighbour's kids kick a ball off the d pillar on my car once and it did cause a dent like that with no broken paint or scratch. A smart dent repair expert should be able to fix that or at least make it less noticeable.

I did something similar once with a ladder. Hard to explain but I was putting up against a wall and couldn't hold it and in wrestling with it it turned and fell on the car. I still had hold the ladder so it wasn't the full weight but it made a similar dent but a bit further up on the other side of the mirror. Really annoyed with myself over it as I was being too lazy to move the car.

Another possible I've come close to doing is having something slip off a roof rack when loading it with something really heavy. In a car park a near by car would have really caught a smack.

Step daughter had to pay out (home insurance iirc) when she let her trolley go on a slope in a supermarket car park. It was full traveled a good distance and spun. The family story is that she managed at the last second to throw her not inconsiderable weight on it to try and stop it which just made it worse.

Wake me up when it's all over.

It's strange because there's a mysterious dent about the same size as this at the bottom of the front seat passengers side as well. I wrote that off as someone with a tow bar reversing into me last week but this is strange it happened again.

But if it was vandalism, you'd think they'd go for the middle of a door or a wing mirror or window or something. Why do barely visible things? They could key the car it would be better. We live in a decent estate and the cars always parked in the driveway. There's always someone at home as well so it's very weird. I drive the car to the shops and back about once a week.

I forgot I was in woodies a few days ago so maybe someone with a timber post in the car park accidentally swung it around the back of them and into the side of the car.

Are these things expensive to get 90 per cent fixed? I say 90 per cent because I'm aware that unless the panel is completely replaced it won't ever be absolutely perfect. At least it's nothing majorly noticeable.

Causing damage and not leaving a note is a dick thing to do.

Could you go back to woodies and explain the situation, they might have cctv that caught it?

You would be surprised how talented and skilled some of these smart dent repair guys are. It's amazing the way they can bring the metal back into shape. Have a look on youtube of what some of them can do. I paid €80 I think a few years back to have a panel repaired but it really depends on how much time they have to spend on it. You wouldn't even know it was ever damaged.

I probably could but for 80 euro I don't think I will. I'm not even sure it happened there so I could end up wasting a lot of people's time. I'm going to find a repair person to see what they say

CCTV can only be given to the Gardaí investigating a crime. They aren't going to investigate an offence which the person reporting has no idea where it happened.

Looks like the work of a very large bird

a well fed seagull would be my guess

did you find any feathers at the accident scene?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,397 ✭✭✭CPTM

No feathers or bird found at the scene! But yes it's almost like I hit something like that on the motorway. I definitely didn't because I'd remember if I did I think.

going by what’s the OP has said and the pic I’d say vandalism.

I’m thinking the dent is far too deep just to be a glancing blow caused by a person being careless with a trolley with a pole or post in it. Whatever contacted the car did so at reasonable speed and force to cause a dent like that… you wouldn't cause that dent walking leisurely with a trolley and post…. Scratch or mark perhaps but not that dent.

if a truck reversed into it the likelihood is the mirror is gone… and there would be for certain more cosmetic damage to the paintwork. Which is why I’m guessing the car was targeted by vandals.

Yes the only thing is that it's an awkward place to vandal isn't it? Kicking in the door or breaking a wing mirror would make more sense.

True, but if it was an accident it’s funny how no damage to the mirror which is in front on the dents… no is say vandalism
