Possible electrical fault - 2010 VW Golf

I have a 2010 Golf (Mark 6). The past few months, the light bulb icon has been sporadically coming on on the dashboard, which normally indicated that one of the car's bulbs have burnt out.

However, I've checked all lights (front heads, rear tails, brake lights, all indicators, fogs, rear reg plate, reverse light) and all seem to be working fine, so I'm starting to think that there could possibly be an electrical fault somewhere in the car which is causing the car to think that one of the bulbs have blown. Like I said, it doesn't occur all the time. Some days, it doesn't come on and other days it will.

Anybody have any ideas as to what's causing this??

If you get it on a decent scanner or vcds and check the central electrics module you will be able to see which bulb is causing the error, would give you a good direction to go with

It's just a simple resistance check so you likely have a bad connection somewhere

Possibly a bad connection onto a bulb. Remove and clean tail light connections/bulb holders for a start Also check each bulb is correct wattage. I’d be betting on a rear light

If you don't see any of the usual bulbs are gone then have a look at your rear number plate bulbs, there should be 2 of them working above number plate, they will also trigger the bulb warning and are often overlooked...

Check for a bad earth in the wiring to the bulbs or maybe water getting into the light cluster & rusting things up. Rear light clusters either side would be a good place to start.

Would VAG-COM be able to identify where the problem is coming from? Or does that only check for faults that trigger the check engine light?
