Am I right in thinking that I am not obliged to book seats on an Aer Lingus flight. They will be assigned based on what's left over. I don't want to to have to pay.

No need to book a seat. When it comes to checking in online, you can pick seat then. You will have several tiers of seating/pricing, depending on where you would like to sit but there is a tier that is free, generally in the back half of the plane.

Thank you. I was looking at the seats there when booking the flight and there was a cost associated with all of them. Is it only free after online check-in?

I believe it's only free when you are checking in, am open to correction but that's the experience I've had.

Here's what they came back with unfortunately:

Unfortunately, saver fare does not include a seat by the time you purchase a ticket, you will be assign to purchase a seat at the airport. We look forward to seeing you onboard!

If you do not pay for a seat they will give you one for free.

    Stay strong.

The only downside is you may be separated from travelling partners,

From their site: If you choose not to pre-book a particular seat, we'll allocate one based on remaining availability at check-in. We'll do our best to make sure that you and your travel companions are seated together, particularly if you're travelling with children, but this depends on the number of seats remaining at the time.
