Will a firebird oil boiler heat a coil in a tank with thermal flow or does it have to have a pump?

    Thank you

It might, if the flow/return pipes are rising as soon as they leave the boiler and if the HW cylinder is mounted well above the boiler ie in the hot press on the landing.

Yes, there is no problem with the pipework in the house. My question really was if there is something about the boiler itself that would prevent this from happening.

No, if the circulation rate is too low then the boiler (control) stat will switch the burner on/off, if it doesn't then the hi limit stat which operates at 110C/113C will shut down and lock out the burner and has to be manually reset. Even if the control stat does shut the burner down then the residual heat in the furnace might cause the temperature to rise to 110/113c and still operate the hi limit stat.
