    Hi all.

Seeing as i cant get through to the passport office i said i'd ask here incase anyone has experience.

So i renewed my passport card last year which should have had a 5 year validity but because my main passport is out early next year i obviously only got the 1.5 years on my card to the same date as my main passport.

I am renewing my passport now, do i have to buy another passport card or will they automatically issue me another card for the remaining 3.5 years?

    Thanks!

You need to get a new one. Validity of a passport card is 5 years or until the expiration of your passport, whichever is sooner.

Yeah i know i need to get a new one but i asking will they issue a new one for the remaining 3.5 years or must i buy a new one and start the 5 year cycle again? youd think they would seeing as i paid full price for one only for a year and a half

Say you have to pay full price. The first step in renewal process is select 'product' there are 3 options book, card or book& card.

Perhaps once you have a valid book the card is valid again?

Read again what I said. The card you bought and paid for has expired. You need to BUY a new one. When you bought the original one it was clear how long it would last. At least the new one will last 5 years.

Yes it seems wrong that you're charged the full amount (35 euro) when the passport-card won't be valid after your passport expires.

But you get the passport card for 25 euro if you order it with a passport renewal.

I did find the passport card handy when traveling in Europe earlier this year when you had to show your covid pass and your ID

yeah i use mine all the time. I actually got through this morning and yes you have to pay for a new one. Even tho i see people constantly complaining on the irish in Amsterdam facebook that customs frequently dont know what it is. Ive never had a problem anyway.

But even tho the site says if you have more than 12 months on your current passport book, then you have to submit the actual passport. They told me on the phone today that if its greater than 6 months they will notify you to submit the passport. I travel every 2 weeks with work so i need to book an appointment and get a 4 day passport in cork.

OP, why are you renewing your passport now if it expires early next year? Are you planning on travelling to a country that requires a certain number of months remaining on your passport? If so, can you say which country?

Yeah I first got the passport card just to give to hotel when checking in (some have looked quizically at it but accepted it) - I also was renting a car in germany, and they wanted Passport and Driving Licence just to see they were the same (they accepted the passport card).

I had a friend get a passport sorted for her kid (born this year) by ringing up a politician (one she hates!) and it seemed to get sorted quickly , shouldn't be but....

Because if there is more than 6 months on the passport you have to submit it with the application(the web site says 1 year but when i did get through they said 6 months). Twice in the news in the past few weeks ive read about people not being permitted to fly as there was less than 6 months on the passport and it was Ryanair and Aer lingus. I travel every 2-3 weeks for work so i dont want to get caught short. I have a trip next week and i have an appointment for a 4 day passport in cork two days after i return as i travel to Luxembourg 8 working days after i get back.
