Insurer looking for proof of tax

Funny request I’d never seen this before but I’ve always had the car tax up to date

cars off the road genuinely with working from home and holidays I’d hopped to stick it back on road in July, cars too old to let insurance lapse as would be hard source elsewhere and on punitive tax system so I’d rather not tax it until it’s actually being used.

Where do I stand here before I call them up? Theres nothing mentioned in their PDF

Is the insurance for a private car, or commercial. Maybe they are looking to double check who's name the car is registered in - strange request, and I have not scene it before

Send them an email explaining the situation and with a copy of the declaration that it is off-road.

Insurers are looking to see if you are just insuring a shitbox, which is off the road, to cover your driving of another vehicle under the driving of other cars extension

Same happened to me but my case I just forgot to tax it driving around with no tax for about 5 months only few weeks before I letter from insurance got stop at checkpoint 6 am garda looks at discs and said were are you going I said work he was like get going with bit attitude I was like the Moody cu;t .only thinking back on it tax was out like 5 months and i didn't even know he did me a favour could have put me walking

Road tax is a “Revenue Issue” and I’d be telling them that. But as said above they may be trying to make sure you’re not getting a policy so you can drive another car.

Sounds like some sort of anti fraud flag has been raised on your policy.

Best contact them and resolve it asap.

Just jump through whatever hoop they require you to.

What people do is insure a Micra, buy an IS200 and register to an alias, drive the IS200 on third party extension.

only 3 of the insurance companies out there require the car on 3rd party extension to be insured as a main car in another policy.

There’s nothing to test out. You just insure one car and drive another. I registered a 3 litre V6 in a friends name so I could drive it on 3rd party extension at the weekends. Granted the car I insured was my daily. It wasn’t just sitting up doing no driving.

If you borrow someone else's car and want to be covered under the 'driving other cars' clause of your own policy, Allianz, Liberty and Zurich require that there is a policy in place for that car i.e. the owner has a current insurance policy on the car. If there is no policy on the car and your policy is with any of those companies, you will not be insured to drive it.

Putting a car in someone elses name but remaining the beneficial owner of it would not entitle you to drive it under a third party exemption. World of pain if you needed to claim and the insurer found out.

Technically true but they can impose any conditions they like prior to a renewal or issuing a new policy. if they decided to stop insuring yellow cars tomorrow, they would be within their rights to do so.

OP's car is >20 years old and the tax has expired. They are clearly of the mind that he is driving a different car on a daily basis and relying on the cover he has under 'driving other cars'.

I found the opposite, I have a 20 year old car, Axa insured me as a new customer first time I had insurance in my name, have always been a named driver quote was 400e ball park.

I agree axa would quote me on a new policy any time I checked once a year on my old Levin but I stayed with Liberty as they were cheaper but Liberty would quote me every year as I was already with them and they wouldn't quote as a new customer. It's nearly a year since I got rid of the Levin so I do not know what the current situation is with insuring a Jap car but as I said AXA would always quote when other's wouldn't that is online forms I never bothered ringing anyone.

I know that, and so does everyone else who does it. But it gets you past checkpoints etc which is the main thing. I wasn't really interested in the consequences at the time but I think I would have been okay as I’m not sure how it could have been proven otherwise

All the OP needs to do is send his insurers proof of SORN. I have sorned a 20 year old car numerous times for up to 2 years at a time. When going to reinsure I am always asked for proof of SORN with AXA. When they ask for proof of tax it's either a copy of tax disc or proof of SORN.

If he didn't print & keep a copy of the SORN if done online then he would need to contact Dept of Transport, Shannon they will email it.
