The expanse vs trek

Yes I know this is a star trek thread.

Somebody on the Picard thread kept banging on how good this was in comparison to bad Trek - well discovery and Picard. So far.

    Im five episodes in

Thanks. It is better and superior to those two shows.

I wonder if trek could have gone this route? More gritty.

I know it did it in deep space 9.

Im only on season 1 the expanse.

I did feel discovery season 1 was good too. It had grit and subversion. But unfortunately it's story archs were too focused on Burham. As far as I recall

The expanse show is good, but nowhere near as good as the books. That said both the show and the books have a lot of drag in them and I have no desire to re read or re watch it, as good as it was. I feel the same about DIS and PIC but the older trek stuff is much more rewatchable and fun, maybe because its a bit more 'of the week'

    That Prax guy...

    Prax guy?

    Future season character.

I think Dark Trek is possible, and entirely possible along the ragged edge of the galaxy, it's just like everything else ATM the writers aren't anywhere near talented enough to pull it off. More interested in "feels" than constructing proper conflicts, goals or desires.

don't worry, you'll meet him in s3 I think. He's not as bad in the show as he is in the books

    Prax isn't "that guy."

Often thought while watching The Expanse that it could have been a really interesting pre-UFP, and even pre-first-contact really, Star Trek show. Starting off rough and showing how we eventually slowly got it together.

but I guess Enterprise and First Contact has long ago ruled out anything so interesting.

The Expanse is very good IMHO, not perfect by any means, but definitely one of the best SF TV shows ever.

I enjoyed it a lot more than most of the "Nu-trek" shows. In terms of the older shows, I feel they both fill different needs with Trek being a much more hopeful optimistic view of the future and The Expanse offering grittiness and more realism. Couldn't really say that one was "better" than the other.

The Expanse is better then any Trek we've had since DS9. Nothing has come close to it imo, and its easily one of the best sci fi shows i've ever seen.

Yes the Expanse is just better than anything since Deep Space Nine. All the human based science is physically possible which is nice, space ships that have to turn round to slow down is a really nice touch, rail guns showing the immense power of simply puncturing a space ship to kill its occupants, G-Forces which can very easily kill you and not a ray gun in sight. SI-FI for grown ups.

You get g-force when under acceleration anywhere, even in space.

Different types of sci fi, yes the expanse is better than nu trek but that's just weighting the shows. Is it better than old trek, you can't compare them, completely different types of shows

You get g forces wherever there is acceleration. The earth supplies that acceleration through its gravity and is the reason why the standard unit of measure is gravities or Gs.

Im giving it a go. I actually watched a few episodes a few years back and abandoned it but given the praise heaped here and elsewhere Im going back. Its often an advantage to wait and see if a series at least gets three seasons.

Im kinda sick of Discovery. Only brining back Riker or Worf would make me watch a third season of Picard

    Im liking strange new Worlds

It took me a few attempts to get through the first season. I just wasn’t into the hard boiled space-detective thing. There’s less of that as it goes on though. Really top-tier character and world building, with exciting and grounded science fiction.

i must do a rewatch soon actually. Maybe that first season has improved in retrospect.

Opposite here, I was quite enjoying the space detective thing. Would have been happy to see more time in that phase \ steady state of universe and for things to ramp up more slowly. Expanse reminds me of Babylon 5 in some respects, more so than Star Trek.

I didn't like the Miller segments much at first either but on rewatches I find them much better.
