Considering cancelling my new car order.

hi folks, in Feb I put an order in for a new car but i'm considering cancelling the order now because of the Ukraine war and the potential for further fuel price hikes. I'm thinking of going for an EV instead. I was told in Feb that the car might be ready by August/September, but this was pre-Ukraine war so i'm guessing i could be waiting even longer.

If the car i ordered hasn't gone onto the assembly line yet, how difficult is it for the dealer to cancel the order? They obviously won't be happy with losing the business, but will they be out of pocket? Is it possible for them to cancel the order? I don't care about them losing my business, but i'd be less likely to cancel the order if they'd actually be out of pocket with a car in the forecourt but no buyer.

    thanks.

They'll sell it no bother. Just let them know sooner rather than later.

Is the EV the same brand, the dealer may welcome the change once your original order wasn't for something out of the ordinary colourwise, they will have the original car on the way and your business on the new order.

Yea, i paid 500 deposit. I'm willing to walk away from that rather than end up with a car I no longer want, but I haven't talked to the dealer yet. This is all just hypothetical for another few days. I have an EV test drive booked next week. Why didn't I test drive an EV before now? Well, i don't like the look of them and have concerns about battery degradation, but the talk of a Russian oil embargo has me seriously rattled, plus the fact diesel is now more expensive than petrol with no end in sight.

What did you order. You’ll love driving an ev.

With chronic production delays across all manufacturers, VAG being particularly bad, I’d be surprised if your car is built yet. Your dealer might be as well pleased if you cancelled. If it’s an EV you want, you could ask them to swap your deposit onto an ID3 / ID4. But with the aforementioned delays, you are unlikely to get one anytime soon.

They are sold out of EVs.

VW now quoting April 2023 as earliest delivery and not currently taking orders.

It's not impossible that i'd order an EV of the same brand, but it's not the one that has turned my head. Cupra Born is the EV i'm going to test drive.

Thanks for the replies folks. I'll play it by ear and if i come out of the EV test drive convinced it's worth cancelling the existing order, then i'll have to make an awkward phone call.

Let us know how you get on. Happy Id.3 driver here but a lot of people like the Cupra.

Have you seen or heard anything on the new Renault Megane E-Tech?That is the EV you should be checking out.

It looks quiet normal and classy too.

    Rave reviews for it already.

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.

Just an update on this. I decided to stick my original car order. I loved the EV test drive - fantastic acceleration and overtaking... really fun to drive. Couldn't really fault anything with the EV - it didn't feel heavy like some say. Found myself driving a lot faster than I thought i was doing, because you can't tell what speed you're at from engine revs or gear.

I decided to stick with the existing order for two reasons.

    1. Range worries persist with a 58kw battery. I drove 30km for the test drive and the charge went from 60% to 52% on a warm day. That was doing 80kph - 100kph at times. I'd be commuting on the motorway at 120kph.
    2. The EV dealer offered me 3.5k less for my trade in than my current deal. That was insulting.

I'll probably keep my new ICE car for two or three years and then go electric, but range and price have to come down as the SEAI grant is phased out, and more hot hatch choices would be nice.

Well wear, most EVs in my opinion are ugly as f**k.

Most EV now copy the combustion engine equivalent, a lot of times a combustion car just with a battery in it.

Not exactly. If you look at the side profile of the Ionic 5, EV6 and ID.3, etc. they are much taller than traditional ICE cars in order to accomodate the batteries under the floor and maximise interior space. Even the BMW i4 sits a bit taller than the ICE 4 Series on which it's based. Probably not as noticeable however to most folks given the popular trend in recent times for crossovers and SUVs anyway.

Someone in the Cupra Born thread did say a dealer mentioned late Summer delivery but people with the first lot of orders from March still haven't heard anything concrete and considering VW said all EVs are sold out for 2022 I would expect 2023 at the earliest. ID.3 orders from as far back as July last year are only starting to be delivered now. Only reason the Born is getting UK/IE deliveries ahead of the ID.3 is because it has some priority in the factory as it's a 'new' model, similar with the ID.5.

I think the Ioniq 5 is also sold out for the year? I think orders open in September for 2023, my sister was looking at one to replace her Kona.

Of course plenty of people are getting lucky with cancellations, but I don't think the shortage is any with with EVs than it is ICE cars?

How long is your commute? Would a plug in hybrid work instead of a full EV.

The mk8 golf has one of the most infuriating infortainment systems out there.
