I am asking advice on prices and quality of providers as i need to downsize my e35 package from vodafone as not using its full potention.

I was with virgin until i got lost on Google maps with no coverage and changed to vodafone.

Very little phone use chatting and the odd text and whatsapp and facebook.

So asking users out there if any cheaper and quality ones like Tesco as i need to save on outgoing finances Cheers.

48.ie 10.99 for me, all calls, texts, 100 GB data. More expensive now. 28 days I think.

You can get a free SIM and 1 GB to check coverage etc etc

Redme note 11. 185 euro. Absolutely great, except for very average camera. 189 in Harvey Norman at the moment.

    YMMV

Gomo is 14.99 a month as well. They work off Eir network.

Anybody try gps road trip and it worked and even going into Dublin i got lost with gps issue.Cheers.

48.ie ok for me round Dublin, Wicklow and GPS and Google maps.

    But, maybe I was lucky.

You can get a free SIM to test it out for yourself.

GPS is separate to your mobile signal, so changing network isn't going to make a difference there.

48.ie, Virgin and Tesco all use the 3 network, so your only real option is to use GoMo, since that is on the Eir network.

You also have the option of switching to a Vodafone SIM only plan if you want the best mobile signal. They have a plan for €20/month with unlimited texts and data.

When i had Virgin mobile i lost gps to where i was going and when i got there i had no phone service and everybody else on Vodafone was working so i assumed both were linked. Cheers

You don't need internet or mobile signal for using Google maps just use the offline option obviously need an internet connection initially to download but good to go after that'

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,583 ✭✭✭greasepalm

I had already downloaded it to phone like i always did and no signal 75% into journey was not good.

Now i have phone + a sat nav in car as useless with a paper map.

Left vodafone as too pricey and got a virgin media sim and already having issues as i cannot send a photo and text to people and coming back not sent.

Fun bit is i got my number ported over and can make phone calls but if i send a text to someone it is seen as my new sim card number and no option to change in blackview a80 pro. They dont support mms

Who uses MMS these days? I've used Virgin in the past, but wouldn't recommend them. Their customer service is actually very good, but I had a lot of problems similar to you. I also couldn't send and receive texts when roaming in the UK, which was a bit painful.

I'm on vodafone x which suits me. I had left them & to get me to come back they offered me €10 credit back every month which I use to pay for disney+. rented the odd movie on youtube as well for the kids. doesn't make sense for me to look for cheaper plans. I've always had issues with other networks for coverage & find vodafone is usually the best.

I can refer a friend where we each get a €20 voucher for penneys or amazon if anyone is interested in trying it.

vodafone was good no issues but as living on social welfare payments now i need to save on my outgoings. I dont use phone as much as i did but need to send texts and photos is my issue on vm.

who are you sending photos to? would whatsapp not solve that for you?

I have very low usage, most of what I use my phone for is data, internet & whatsapp to contact most people. rarely send texts & only the odd phone call.

Is everybody on WhatsApp as can use that BUT its on my new sim number i dont want that one just my regular old ported number.

Went into phone settings and it lists the new number and cannot edit it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,041 ✭✭✭TheRona

That's fine, your phone is pulling the number from the SIM, which will be the original number before you ported across. Anyone on WhatsApp will see your usual number that you ported across.

Didn't realise other "cheapo" mvno's were blocking MMS.I thought only 48 doing it unless you have a credit in your account.Who else blocks them? GoMo,Postfone.............? time I sent an MMS was BC????

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,583 ✭✭✭greasepalm

Yes just rechecked on WhatsApp yes nice to know i can still chat or send photos.

Might have to find another provider for ease of text and photos if others are not on WhatsApp.

Unsure what mms is and is that classed as a photo as when on switcher.ie mentioned mms for controlling other devices and i think that might be like a sat box tethering for a lan connection.

For me ' CLEAR MOBILE' has been great ../ no complaints. They used to be €12.99 per month ( guaranteed for life) but I think it's gone up by 2euro now. All calls/ texts & unlimited data....I'm North CORK ...no issue coverage

mms multi media messaging service--allows the sending of videos, photos, audio.now redundant due to apps like whatsapp, tiktok, snapchat etc

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,583 ✭✭✭greasepalm

Vodafone i could send photos and texts but twice the price , looks like i have to leave VM as no use sending a text on my new number nobody knows and crackly service.

More shopping to do now and see now why mms was dropped.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,041 ✭✭✭TheRona

I thought you had ported your number?

MMS is vary rarely used these days. Not only has sending pictures been replaced by Whatsapp etc, but RCS messaging is becoming the new standard for sending messages, which is replacing SMS/MMS. A lot of Android phones already use this type of messaging.

There are several carrier options you can try in the €10-15/month range, such as 48.ie and GoMo.

According to Vm my number was ported over correctly as never heard how phone shows my 086 on calls to people as they see me and answer it , and text as 089 is unknown to friends and in all the sims i have used is a first + crackly reception not good.

    M

I always had problems with MMS unless I was sending the photo to someone on the same network and even then in olden times if the recipient had some bronze age phone they were not able to receive it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,583 ✭✭✭greasepalm

Yes the Nokia 310 struggles at least now i know if i want a mms service i have to pay for it. No problem as can use WhatsApp once i get my number sorted by a new provider.

Cheers folks helped me see what i did not see/know.
